I hope someone can help. I had some new halogen downlights put in. In the process the electrician forgot to put the power off and there was a power surge, (he rode off on his horse with my money and hasn't been seen since!). The main tripped but now 2 lights on the circuit don't work - bedroom on dimmer and en suite standard light with a fan. I replaced the dimmer with one that I knew worked, no joy.

I checked and there is no power getting to the dimmer in the bedroom or the en suite switch. The rest of the lights etc in the flat are fine just these 2 are the problem. Any suggestions as I can't really afford another electrician and would like to exhaust all possible solutions that I can.

Any help greatly appreciated...

I would say he has dropped a connection when jointing the halogens.

Nothing to do with 'a power surge'.

Where are the downlights you mention in relation to the lights that are not working?
Why do you feel the electrician caused the problem?

The halogens are on a different circuit from the bedroom and en suite. They were only connected after the power was tripped and reset (i.e after the problem developed and the lights on the rest of the circuit are fine).

jj4091 - I know I don't know much but that is what I thought -How can I find out which light comes first in the circuit? i.e the bathroom or the bedroom? Could it have anything to do with the bathroom fan if that comes first in the circuit?

(The flat is only 3 years old if that has any relevance).

Thanks for your responses!

It would be usual to go from the consumer unit to the nearest light fitting, then the next neatest etc. But the only real way is to disconnect one room at a time & test for a supply ( using a multimeter not a neon screwdriver). The bathroom fan is unlikely to be first in the circuit I would have thought.
