Hi all,

I don't know much about electrics but recently managed to change my old ceiling light to a fancy Halogen IKEA one and now both the dimmer and the transformer in the light buzz when i turn it on.

I have taken the dimmer off and put a normal switch on and the light then works fine

Do i need a special dimmer for halogen lights, something i'll have to put up with or have i done something wrong?

For info the light is using 8 x G4 12V 10W Halogen bulbs (if that helps)

Some buzzing is normal for dimmer switches, you can get more expensive dimmers that are "acoustically sealed" so this buzzing is reduced.

Hi Synapse

Thanks for the reply, looked over some other posts and seen that a more expensive (and better quality) dimmer will reduce the noise.

When i had my old ceiling light the dimmer was fine, could hardly hear it, but with the new light installed it is 'really really' loud.

Do you know if its normal for the transformer in the light to buzz too?

Your need to check with the instruction / supplier.

There are transformers that do dimming and others that don't
