Hi all,
Can anyone help solve a problem for me?
I want to fit a water butt in the rear of my house.
The problem is my downpipe is at the end of my semi next to the pathway leading to the front of the property and there is a patio door right next to it.
There is about 60cm between the door and the end of the wall so I could get away with a slim butt there but it would restrict access down the side of the house and limit the volume of water I can catch.
So, I would rather place the butt on the other side of the patio doors to my down pipe if possible. This would make for easier routing of irrigation to my garden/veg plot as well.
Is there any simple way I can acheive this?
For instance is there a rain diverter that I can fit just above the patio doors and rout the feed pipe from it over and down the other side of the doors into mu butt?
I'm guessing not as it wouldn't be able to stop the flow when the butt is full, or am I missing something?
Any ideas on how to achieve this greatly appreciated.
Regards to all
Clive

Is it possible to put in another extra downpipe wherever you need the water butt?

With the correct fittings, when the water butt is full it will by-pass the water butt into the downpipe instead

Hi masona,
I guess "can't" is too strong a word but it would involve taking up my patio to get the new downpipe into the soakaway. An expense, and hassle, I could do without to be honest.

The rainwater diverters need to be at the same level as the final level in the water butt. So if you diverted above the patio doors you would need a very tall water butt or one with a sealed lid and an open-vented vertical pipe above it into which the diverter hose fitted.
However, theoretically you could have the diverter at "normal" level and run a hose downwards, across the bottom of the patio doors and then back up again and into the water butt. Don't know how well this would work in practice though.

I like the theory of this Stephen  , it is certainly easily achievable. I think I will give it a go and let you know how I get on :D
