Day Rate

Hello All.

I'm a Gas safe plumbing/Heating engineer. Been in the game for about 24 years. My Q is. how much day rate should I be charging a private home owner in Islington North London.

I don't want to over charge but of course don't want to under charge.

24 years in the job and you don't know how much to charge a day?

It' s not like so lets not be stroppy.

Used to charge 300 per day befor I moved to Aus. We are in a reccesion can I still charge that sort of money.

Just want to hear what plumbers think

Give the customer a price, that way everyone knows where they stand.

The last thing you want is being told you are dragging the job out.

I may be able to do that now the job is underway . But the house is over 100 years old + years of neglect and cowboy builders/Plumbers have taken taken their toll. If I give her a price I will cover my ars. It is difficult.

You may be lucky in Essex but in much of britain there are so many of us gas fitters there is no work at all. Not a question of your day rate. Can't make overheads. rong trade now change or go bankrupt.

The problem is Paul, people think its an easy way to make alot of money. Anyone can do a bit of plumbing, not every one can do a good plumbing job. And the customer generally don't know the diffrence between a good tradesman and a cowboy.

The day I can't earn a decent wage will be the day I work in B&Q.

Good luck mate

Now with plastic plumbing any fool can replace us, and does.

Paul There is alot more to Plumbing than Plastic pipes.

I concertrate on being profesional clean and tidy, reliable, and I install it rather than chuck it in.
I've seen the plastic pipe merchants at their best and they still fnck it up.

Don't give up mate just improve.

I am good enough but we can allways improve.

No I mean that those have a goers people only call us when they mess up. Instead of asking us to do the job in the first place.

Now that I don't advertise at all (because there is no point carrying that overhead just so people can ring me up to con me out of money and harrass me all day), all my work comes from old customers or recommendations. Half of that work fixing things for them after they have got themselves into a right mess.

But it just about keeps me out of the poor house, and I am a lot happier. But plumbing is the worst career decision in our town for anybody starting out in the area even if they are already skilled. ~those without skill have no hope.

I don't expect to still be struggling to scrape a living with these good skills for too much longer myself as I have other plans, but nothing off the ground as yet.

If you go to the gas safe website http://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/

and put in my postcode which is yo12 4at you will find me first and then 50 others within 1.42 miles of my address, in a town with a population of 106,000 people, which is pretty remote from other areas.

That is the qualified guys. then there are all the off duty firemen property developers diyers workers for cash while on dissability benefiters, workers for cash while on job seakers allowance, general builders who now do their opwn plumbing except the odd part of it they need us for, like when they get a leaking lead pipe.

~It's hopeless, the future is somewhere else.

I think Plumbing will always be my bread and butter but I too am looking into other things, maybe a few fingers in a few pies. The problem is Plumbers are considerd just above the unskilled and people question how much you charge them as they can pay cheaper and get it fncked or do iyt them selfs and Fnck it up.

The thing is the public time and time again realise they have messed up getting a cheap job, but repeat the mistake time and time again as they are not prpared to pay a proffesional.

O well.
