could you please tell me if a woman would be able to do this easily.
i need some repointing done in the loft on an outside wall.
if left could this be a serious problem.

Pointing for a woman?
In my experience they usually do it during arguments or when walking past expensive clothes shops.

Ok feel bad now

We live in an age of equality, if men can serve drinks and snacks on an aircraft then I'm damn well sure that a woman can point up brickwork.

When you say in the loft, do you mean the inside of the wall and not the exterior? If so then it won't need pointing, re-pointing is done outside to repair old and badly pointed brickwork, as if left it can allow moisture to penetrate the structure. Inside, not worth bothering with. Good place to practice though if you've already bought your trowels :D

What on earth brought tihs about anyway, was it an item brought up on todays episode of Loose Women?

I spotted a young lady last weekend, doing a bit of pointing to a stone wall.
It's amazing what the fairer sex get up to.

eh i think it is a question?

As regards the pointing, whilst it is a very straight forward job to get a sound and strong new joint the skill of repointing is doing it neatly which for a first timer is difficult and once its done you could have a pretty grim result if your not careful.

The question goes begging,,,, Do you have a chain long enough to allow her to leave the kitchen??

Leave the kitchen?...........................she's trying to escape by raking out the mortar from the gable end in the loft. Shame she doesn't know that it's a long way down.

Sarah Beeny had a woman learning to point on her DIY show tonight, on channel 4. No reason why you shouldn't point up. I take it that you'r working inside the roof loft on the inside brickwork. Perished interior pointing is never "serious", it's when interior brickwork is reqd that things get a little more intense.

There's more that can be said so if you intend to go ahead (lofts can be tricky) come back here for advise and suggestions.

As a matter of interest, the construction trades in America have had women in substantial numbers for a number of years, including masons and bricklayers - mostly union, hence properly trained and highly skilled.

Americans,,, properly trained and highly skilled ?? You've been watching too many episodes of This Old House with our Norm.

Must admit, they have some great design ideas though. (always nice if your kitchen/living room/bedroom/ any room/ ad infinitum, happens to be the size of an aircraft hangar).

Norm and his TV ilk have as much in common with on site skills as Tommy Walsh's building trade knowledge.
US construction unions train all their apprentices to a high standard, and the training is continuous thro a tradespersons career. Hence their pay and benefits take them up to professional living standards.
Most of our best tools and accessories came from the USA, eg. the tool belt, "skil" saw, reciprocating saw, portable table and mitre saws etc. And, not least, production work practices - whatever one thinks of them, coming from NY Levitt town and California tracts 1945-50 onwards.
The above are facts not value judgements.

Man or Woman, repointing is a fairly straight forward job. How well the person does it depends on the individuals aptitude to practical work. I suggest you note Deluks second post and comments. Probably best to ignore the rest tho!
