it is hard to price a job without seeing it, but still a combi 2 combi swap is about £2000.
I can get a potterton promax HE or vaillant ecotec for about £700 so thats £1300 labour.
Still a very good price

So how long on average does it take to 'earn' your £1300 quid?
As a rule of thumb it takes a GP 3 days to earn that sort of money. So how many days does it take you? 4? 5? Or just a morning?

Dear OP, you seem a nice enough sort of chap, heres some advice for you, take it or leave it, i dont mind.

No one here can see the job in question, which sort of makes it difficult to give even a rough idea of how much its likely to cost.

write yourself a specification of what youre after, ie, position of new boiler, any alterations you may require etc etc, then stick to this when you ask people round so everyone is pricing the same job.

what may look like a straight forward job to you may not be so easy as you think.

ignore the google warriors who tell you who is cheap and expensive and what hourly rate you should be paying, they are frustrated lorry drivers or binmen or somesuch job.

if you get a written estimate that portrays the job you want done at a price you consider fair, isnt that what its all about? why would you care about hourly rate??

remember the companies you ask to price are run as a business, businesses dont survives on a basic hourly rate and everyone will be looking for a certain ammount of profit on the job in hand, profit is not a dirty word and is the basis of a sucessful society.

everyone knows someone cheap, do you want a cheap job or a proper job?

ask family/friends/collegues for recommendations, get two or three prices, sit down with them, ask a few questions, give them a chance to advise, listen to what they say if you dont understand ask more questions.

internet forums can be great places, but they can also be full of faceless nobs who know a lot about f@#k all.

are we talking profit or how much i paid myself? if you run a business, when a job makes you a bit of money you dont fold it into your back pocket and head for the pub, it stays in the kitty to go towards all of your expenses and hopefully leave you a bit at the end.
i pay myself the same ammount every month and i think youd be pretty surprised just how small that sum is.

Do you not read the OP, they quite clearly stated "1x 24 kw Boiler (not a combi- I believe a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 24i was recommended")
The clue I feel is the "Not a Combi"

Maybe you should upload written copies of all your purchase transactions where the profit made by each organisation is clearly displayed, each time, on the receipt.

My suppliers only seem to show at best, unit price, discount, sub-total, VAT then grant-total. They must all be part of the World-wide commercial Magic Circle.

Do you not read the OP,

If OP's post was read again, there are a few errors e.g 'larger exhaust' when it should read larger condensate.

Me thinks the OP should leave the task to a competent person that comes with high recommendations. Difficult to find but they are there. Boiler change is easy but other pitfalls are what hold the surprise.

Did three calls yesterday. All pro jobs I would say.

1. Linea 24 boxed in in a wall cabinet by a kitchen fitted. Had to remove the cabinet to get to the boiler.

2. Pump change on a Thorn. Fitted pump to bleed high point- Bleed pin only let air when pin nearly out. Was prepare for this with vacuum on hand

3. Linea 28 burner pressure at 9mbars. Gas line undersized. New kitchen being fitted next week. Hob is being replaced with a 6 burner unit.

Above is on a good day. So, OP you will not be saving money but will be a happier man to engage services of someone who provides a service that is head and shoulders above the rest of the crowd. Friends and family will point you in the right direction.

If it's over £35/£45 per hour - get more quotes as they are ripping you off.

Now that you've confirmed, in another post, that you charge £45/h, would you be kind enough to advise, should the need arise, to increase that charge. This way the Nation's tradesmen can align themselves with you without fear of appearing to rip their customers off.

Probably unlike the above trades , the heating installer ends up having to deal with the carp that has been dumped into the market place by boiler manus (& i will include all or the majority of manus ?) this can result in un paid call backs !

I doubt that there are any self employed installers on this site who have not lost time & money & had there reps damaged by boiler manus ?

I doubt there are many who have NOT repaired boilers they have installed at there own expense , for customers , due to the boiler going t**s up just out of warranty !!!

The TV repair man should consider himself very fortunate that boiler manuu's do not supply the electronics for the tvs he repairs ???
