Hi,
We bought a house to rent out ...and during the periodical Electrical Safety check, our Qualified Electrician was concerned that the Gas Meter Earth was on the input side rather than on the output side....is this cause for concern?
(The initial check some 4 years ago was carried out by the 'Letting Agents')

Yes, it is a cause for concern and if it isn't in contravention of some gas regulation I'd be amazed.

Have your electrician move it.

Where practicial the main protective bonding conductor should be within 600mm of the service meter on the consumers side or at the point of entry into the building - regulation 544.1.2 BS7671.

Wow!!!! ban-all-sheds.....
that was a quick reply!!!! thanks a million.
I forgot to add another question!!.....our Electrician says that the Electrical Socket supplying power to the Gas cooker should not be above the cooker top....if you give another positive answer, then I'll be having words with our 'Letting Agents'!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you mean that there is a socket vertically above the hob of the cooker?

In the old days of cookers with eye-level grills it was quite common for the cooker switch/socket to be above the cooker. With hobs being open it is no longer allowed if the socket is close to the hob.

At what height is the socket? Send us a picture - your electrician is probably correct.

The IEE Electricians Guide to the Building Regulations states that Cooker control switches, extractor fan switches etc should not be mounted so that it is necessary to lean or reach over gas or electric hobs for their operation.

It is also implies that the cooker switch should be at least 300mm away from the edge of the hob.
