Hi guys

Is there a 'going rate' on a plastering guarantee, that professional plasterers would offer?

With shop items I guess it's normally 12 months, but was curious what common practice was with plastering jobs.

good question newbie! do you know i've not yet been asked for one, i guess 12 months is right though? means the property you've worked on has had a full set of seasons, what with the movement possible from changes in temperature.

its not wise to guarantee plastering for a year monkey let alone guaranteing it against movement, buildings move plaster don't , so cracks appear , imagine plastering a ceiling and then telling them that ceiling comes with a years guarentee, 10 months later theres movement or abuse of the ceiling and they call you back, its not very wise to give guarantees like that, if theres a problem with the job i have done and its my fault i would rectify it, but to give a years guarantee against movements or cracks is something i wouldn't do, just food for thought monkey incase you are ever asked to guarantee work

Never been asked to give a written guarantee on plastering alone, but like steve would be unwilling to because of reasons stated.

A good example was a loft conversion we done a couple of years ago, 2 bedrooms en-suite and computer/box room, we also renovated the rest of the house.
got a call a couple of months ago re- livingroom ceiling cracked, off i went to investigate only to discover they were using the box room above for a multi gym....

Yehh, that's what they're telling you Alastair,, all that "riding" on excercise bikes, bumping up and down etc. I did hear, that gym, er sorry,, Jim, is quite a lad.,,,, or was it a quiet lad,,, whatever.

Sorry to veer a bit off track Newbee. I would say that any reputable plasterer who takes pride in his work would confidently expect his work to last for years. ;)

absolutely Steve! i would never give a guarantee against movement etc, in fact my favourite phrase is 'i can't guarantee that cracks won't reappear' but i would expect work i did to last like RC says and you're right in that if there is anything wrong that was down to workmanship i'd be there to put it straight.

like i say i've never been asked once for a guarantee, why do you ask Newbie?

No special reason, the thought just occurred to me after reading one of the recent posts where something has gone wrong.
I know those are as a result of poor workmanship though!
Had a quick search, but not a lot of posts in this area, so thought it worth asking ;)

Sorry to veer a bit off track Newbee

No probs, enjoyed the detour :D

Thanks guys

My 'guarantee' if you can call it that is along the lines of -

"You may get a bit of hairline cracking as it dries and settles, especially at the_______ (insert where it may be likely eg ceiling line or under stairs etc)

but give me a ring if you have any problems and I'll come out and have a look at it for you"

IMHO the best guarantee I can give is that I've been recommended and want you to recommend me too (I've never advertised, not through any reason but just have always had enough work)
