MP's back ban on prisoners votes

Well the government have voted by a massive 234 to 22 to defy the European Court of Human Rights, directive on votes for prisoners serving less than 4 yr terms.
Good on em. It's about time we stood up to the European Parliament and told them , we don't like their constant interference in our countries laws etc.
Now would be the ideal time for the government to push for a repeal or change, of the Human Rights Act.
What do others think?

I totally agree with you but I doubt they've got the b@lls to take it that far unfortunately. They'll probably be quaking in their boots waiting to see what the repercussions of this 'defiance' will be first

This issue has been blown out of all proportion. I say let our 'Human Rights' friends have their wish and give prisoners the right to vote. Of course 'having the right to vote' is fine, being able to get to a Polling Station might prove a little tricky!

Well they've got what they wanted haven't they? No one can force us to set up a Polling Station inside the prisons.

What a succinct reply Blas. I'm not sure that would stop the EU demanding to have polling stations set up in prisons though. But at least the way the MP's have voted, shows that they can try to stand up to the EU nonsense imposed on us.

At the moment I applaud the MP's for voting this way.
But wait till the EU says, "Oh yes you will obey."
Somehow it will get through on a 'technicality'.

Do what the french do and just ignore them. If they fine us, don't pay.
Get some backbone you MP's and do what you are supposed to do!
Represent your electorate and carry out their wishes.

Probably have the same mentality of the people who don't bother to vote at election time, then blame everyone else for the state of the country. Or perhaps, filling in their expenses forms in the HOC Bar. Even they have to get some priorities right

I don't believe for a minute that the Government stuck two fingers up at EU laws..there is some underlying reason for this..that will become evident.

After all the laws that passed to call a Cheddar cheese, or a Melton Mowbray pie, or a Cornish Pasty...the UK Government have an agenda.

Maybe a law for dual currency? Euro/Sterling? And to tax the use of one or the other, on it's usage?

If you buy something Sterling, it costs 20% VAT, if you use Euro, 25%? Due to the conversion rates..might be an earner, to boost the economy? If the rates fall, a loser.

OK lads and lasses, I'll be the first to admit, that the vote does not reflect the amount of MP's in the House of Commons.
Why do you think this should be?

Simply because the Labour Party failed to turn up for the vote.
Well they are the ones that will lose out. Accept the facts peeps .We need to rid ourselves of these silly EU laws that inflict on our lives the way they do.
Before we know it, your neighbor will be taking you to court , simply because your heterosexual. Against EU rules apparently.

I am not aware of any other area, that the UK Government has shifted on a single item. Melton Mowbray pies, or Cornish Pasties...the Government broke their own rules, and passed an illegal law. The Government is making many claims, the backtracking. They don't have a clue.

I've spoken to my local MP's, and they are so out of touch with people. Do you really think the people you elected are out there to help you? Or succumb to EU law, and screw you?

I don't want to buy a 'traditional pasty', in the shape of a Cornish pasty.

The EU governs everything, but the politicians have said no. Prisoners can't vote. Pity the scene, at a Primary school, with the pedophiles lined up to vote. Time to get rid of EU directives, but will they?

Basically we just need a referendum to extract ourselves from the shackles of the EU.

Then let the repurcussions begin.
At the end of the day we will survive and be the better for it.
As for trade blockages we don't make or manufacture anything anymore and most of the stuff we do is crap so no big deal imo.
China alone could probably supply our needs.
Irelands benefit from the EU since ascension is about 67 billion in hand outs and an estimated 100 billions worth of fish stolen by the EU.

Brussels did not originally say all prisoners must be allowed a vote. Within the previous government they said that UK cannot deny all prisoners the vote, i.e. apply a blanket ban on voting.
Not quite the same thing.
A discussion in parliament resulting in an exclusion policy for 'serious' offenders would have been perfectly acceptable. The 'seriousness' of the crime would have been determined by parliament.
The previous government kicked it into the long grass, hoping it would go away. It didn't, because we did nothing, it came back with a ruling that we must allow prisoners the vote.

If you accept that prison serves two purposes: one to punish and two to rehabilitate:
Those prisoners that are shortly due for release should be rehabilitated into society and that means allowing them to vote.

If they had the vote they would probably be eligible for postal voting and the governor would be responsible for registering their eligibility, as in care homes and similar situations.
