My VW Golf TDi suspention dropped!

Hi, Whilst parked outside my home I just heard a loud bang from my car and then the car alarm went off. On inspection, the front nearside suspention appears to have dropped (nearly touching the wheel arch). Can anyone tell me what may have happened and if the car would be safe to drive to my nearest garage 5 miles away.

sounds as if a coil spring has broken, i wouldnt advise driving it anywhere as its possible that the broken spring could damage the tyre.
Get someone to have a look for you to confirm the problem

Yep this is certain to be the cause of the bang/drop! Sounds like its gone somewhere in the middle for it to drop by so much! Don`t risk driving as it could rip your tyre to bits!

I'm the third person to agree with the diagnosis, and also say you may risk damaging a tyre if you drive the car.
When you renew the spring do the other side as well, as that won't be far behind, it's a relatively easy job to do yourself if you have a set of spring compressors, and a bit of mechanical savvy, what ever you do, don't work under the car unless it's properly supported.

oops just realised you are a lass, not that some lasses don't have mechanical savvy

Thanks for your responses, you were all quite right! I have now had the coil springs repaired (both sides) together with suspension top bearings and anti rollbar link arms.
Luckily I had Green Flag home cover so they recovered the vehicle and took to the garage for me so I did take your advice and not drive it.
I may be a lass and not yet mechanically savvy (yet) but thanks to you I know a little more now!
