What type of ceiling is this and how can I fix it?

Polystyrene tiles? Not sure if these are still available due to them being a fire hazard. Have a wander down B&Q since they used to be pretty common.
 
You could always nail them back up.



Top tip, use short nails or they might stick up through the floor above.
 
Be nice to have a look at what is above them, could possibly give clues to how they are installed, some kind of suspended grid system.

That would be one mighty grid system, especially if that's a door architrave in that picture :wink:
 
Whos gonna tell the poor soul in painting and Decorating that 1970`s artex contained asbestos?
 
It's looking more like a polystyrene covered (wettened) lowered hardboard ceiling which is supported on some picture rail :shock:
 
Ahh North Carolina, reason the tiles dropped is the tornado took the rest of the house above :D
