How to repair a ceiling hole?

Hi,

I'm trying to replace the ceiling lights in my lounge but on removing the first one I was shocked to find that on removal of the final screw it was still stuck to the ceiling. After a gentle pull I found out why; the light had been plastered to the ceiling and came off with a large chunk of plaster still attached to it.

So now I'm left with a big hole in the ceiling which is bigger than the base of the new light I'm trying to install.

Can anyone suggest the best way of repairing this? Apologies if the scale of the hole isn't apparent, but I can easily fit my hand through.

Was thinking about possibly glueing a baton up inside the hole and filling up to it but it is reasonably deep and so I'm not 100% convinced.

TIA

Rich

can you get to it through the floor above?

Hmmm not easily, just finished decorating upstairs and so I'd rather not lift the flooring up there to get at this if I can possibly avoid it.

Ahh excellent, thanks for this, I'll give it a go.

This house never fails to surprise me with horrendous botch jobs from the previous occupants, thiw as supposed to be a five minute job to replace the ceiling light in our newly decorated lounge! =(
