I have 3 holes in a recently skimmed ceiling which unfortunatly had to be cut out for electrics. The holes are about 6 inches in diameter. I have repaired some big holes before in walls, although not on a ceiling. I have some plasterboard, drywall adhesive and bonding plaster left over from previous work. Which is the best approach here for plastering over these holes? Should I try cutting the holes into squares and fitting plasterboard? (although not sure yet how easy it will be to cut.) Or can I keep the hole as a circle and repair it another way?

Dont cut it any bigger.
If you have plaster board, cut it roundish so it goes in to fill the bulk of the hole & then plaster.
I would use polyfilla, thats because I cant plaster, but I can fill holes & as a diyer it works for me.

1. the previous post will work, but polyfiller tends to grin thro decorations. You can buy small bags of repair plaster, typically, at plumbers supplies.

2. Perhaps, fill the holes with whatever, but keep the filler shy of the finished surface.

3. Wet around the holes and keep wet. This will contain the skim.

4. Apply a proud coat of skim finish and with a very tight steel trowel match the surround. Dont allow build-up at the edges.

5. Try for a few firm strokes to polish it off, but dont be excessively sprinkling the finish with water.

DIYers can't plaster. Don't even bother telling them to try.

I was agreeing with you actually.

I've been fixing houses for 30 years, if my experience tells me that I've sorted something similar in the past then I say so. It's amazing how much duff info you get on this forum by well-meaning but inexperienced people.

The one hole cut-out is directly under a joist, so you'll get a mechanical fixing there.

What numpty cut the hole there!
