hello, here is a project on an old watertower, and I'd appreciate any comments.

It is made of reinforced conrete, about 10 cms thick, and no longer is used for storing water.

It is +/- 6m high and 3m in dia. ie a cylinder shape sitting on good footings.

I would like to cut a door in the side at ground level, about 90cms x 2.10 high, to use the inside

Will the structure mind the hole? what will it tend to do, colapse, belly outwards, what form should reinforcing take?

I bet Fred Dibnah would have known .
But- seeing as he's not around anymore - I would like to bet- it wouldnt move a single mm .
Ask Local BC occifer to pop out and take a look . Or- dig deep into your pocket and get a local S Engineer out to put his name to the 'alteration'.
Thats the sensible option .

At a guess i agree with the last post, i was asked to take a similar stucture down a few years ago and i had to remove well over half the concrete around the bottom before it moved! if it is built half as well as that one you well be fine.

Surprisingly there is no such thing as BC in France, everything is on a "self-certify "/own responsibility basis.

Because of this there are so few people commisssioning calcs that there are very few SE's.

I had to get an English SE to do what I needed ( for my own peace of mind )

thanks for ideas. Once when there was water in it, it coped with the push of several tons of the stuff - outwards.

Now there is just the weight of the structure going down through the walls, so my thoughts go the way as suggested - it will not move.

Also it will get a floor in it (at about + 3m ) which will tie all the sides.

Not keen on 'experts' or their fees.
