Asbestos was removed from the product manufactured by the company using the name artex in 1984, I remember well how we moaned that the replacement product was inferior compared to the original. As for the other manufacturers, wondertex, suretex, clintex etc, they may well have continued to use asbestos up until 1999.

what about the people who mixed asbestos into the artex themselves?

apparently so. it gave a slightly harder tip to the artex.

Just to be clear, I assume you are referring to the factory workers where the powder was made, no one added the asbestos while mixing it on site if you get my meaning.

Did the asbestos make that much of a difference when applying it and finishing it?

Definitely, easier to mix and more time to work with.

Funny really you would'nt have thought that removing what was a minniscule amount of asbestos would have made such a difference, yet your right it did.

Within the 70s and indeed well into the 80s Artex was the in thing, although I must admit that I never classed it's application as Decorating in the true sense of the term. If in those days if you wished to stay in business you had little chance not to apply it.

Yes the good old seventies, never been a lover of artex but we earned good money artexing in those days, everybody wanted it or so it seemed, how times have changed.

Again the mention of Artex has brought back some very pleasant memories, although I think neither of us really cared for the stuff, did you have a favoured pattern. Just pure curiosity really.

Sorry Dec, had to pop out and collect the wife. My favourite pattern was probably broken leather, never really liked the combed patterns although contrary to what some say patterns like circle and basket and flower took a bit of skill to get right, I've seen some shockers mind.

Thanks for the reply, and no need to say sorry. When I asked you if you had a favoured pattern, I must admit that I would have put money on you saying broken leather. Just place a plastic bag over the stipple brush and recreate the sea on a ceiling, well that was also my favoured pattern, with regard to the comb I really did not care for the effect it offered.

It had to be a tesco carrier bag mind I used to slighty flatten the pattern back with a piece of flexible plastic we called a lacer, looked a bit different to the regular broken leather.
