HELP - Disaster
My heating packed up yesterday, had engineer round only lived here 6 years, found out old and olbselete. Cannot afford new heating system. Does anyone know where I can pick up a gas valve. Im just recovering from a spinal fusion and desperately need heating, please help

Your Potterton Netaheat boiler is old and many parts are no longer available. That was also the case six years ago!

Many engineers are not very familiar with that boiler and often dont exactly identify what the problem is. Many can be fixed without replacing the whole gas valve.

When the boiler is started, does the small pilot flame come on?

So far I have always managed to repair any of these which I have been called to but I do keep a small selection of parts in stock just for my own clients.

But your boiler is old and really overdue for replacement. If you are genuinely needy then the Warmfront scheme will provide you with a new free boiler.

A friend of mine fell into his swimming pool when it was empty and fragmented a vertebra. He had a very neat repair made by screwing two metal bars on either side which were screwed into the two vertebra above and the two below. He seems to be fine now and seemed to have very few problems after the op.

Another spent £7000 having a slipped disc trimmed but has found it continuing to be very painful and now four weeks later he can just about walk the 600m to the bookies and back two hours later. But he has at last been cleared to drive again so thats made him more happy.

There are several S/H valves available on ebay, but correct valve ID is essential and buyer beware. I can recall at least 4 different valves for the Netaheat boilers. I think yours is the Netaheat electronic. New valves are scarce but sometimes turn up. Good luck.

Buying a used gas valve is always risky. There is a lot of work required to fit it when you dont even know if its going to work or not.

If the engineer that you called is really anxious to help you then HE should source a replacement! And take the risk of fitting something which does not cure the problem either because its a faulty part or he has wrongly diagnosed exactly what the problem really is.

One house that I visited has THREE Netaheats installed although only one of the two for heating is in use.

I was called because although they have British Gas cover they would not repair the failed boiler citing non availability of spare parts.

Because I am helpful, all I needed to do was to take the required part from the non working boiler to effect the repair. Of course BG could have done that but the engineer refused to !

Thats why I stated Buyer beware. By the way, nice bit of self praise Tony.

Yes , was called out to one of these not long ago , very high tec so had to walk away , well done Tony for keeping these boilers going.

Hero.

I do have a 2nd hand Electronic GV that is in good working order. Took it out of a boiler a few months back. Pay the postage and you can have it.

I am an RGI so I know its ok. Just let me know if you need it.

Nothing wrong with the boiler when I took it out, I guess I'm just not as clever as Tony Agile as I could not repair it.

One does wonder oh mighty one, why you can never help anyone in the CC nowadays?

I have only encountered that just once! At first I tested the boiler and could not identify any fault as it seemed to be working properly. I had to ask the lovely indian lady ( who later gave me some nice food!

Once again, pure brilliance

Netaheat Hi Tec? They were just a lump of cast iron with overcomplicated controls, as our friend has discovered. Lousy thermal efficiency.

Has it been checked for a good fat healthy pilot flame?

Overton House by any chance?

I dont remember the name ( if any ). I only had the number. It was somewhere in a nice area perhaps between Harrow and Boreham Wood or Elstree. All boilers were to the right of the front door. They had a spaniel type of dog!

It had a lovely new oak door which must have cost about £2000+ but the suppliers had predrilled the hole for the lock. But in the wrong place and sp it was going back to have a new section fitted.

I would always drill the lock hole on site!
