Anyone interested in in it? This should be in the new hobbies forum but it hasn't materialised.:evil: So we'll have to bug everyone posting in GD.

If you look at the moon tonight (full moon) and look up - you'll see a reddish star - it's the planet Mars.

Has anyone caught a glimpse of the Aurora tonight? There's some kind of solar storm that could make it visible. Anyone up there north of the border?

Sadly very cloudy where I am just now Joe. It's tonight they are to be at their most visible too :(
Cloud is very low too so not much chance of it lifting any time soon.

I'm hoping to get a picture tonight but we also have some cloud cover. Only got a 300mm lens on but should get a good shot. Been thinking about investing in a telescope, any suggestions? Needs to be able to fit a camera.

Beauty of living in the countryside is the amount you see when you look up and you tend to look up into the night sky. Lot going on as well.

From a star gazing point of view, the biggest plus of living out in the countryside (not that I do), is the fact that there's less light pollution (lights from houses, business, vehicles, street lights etc etc), so you get a clearer view of the sky.

Quite cloudy here in the North East too unfortunately so doubt we'll get to see anything.

Someone did ask a question recently about the planets in the word games/books/everything else section and I found a site for them called earthsky.com which had some quite good info but it does seem rather plagued with adverts....so I have now found a better site called astronomycentral.co.uk lots of info on there.
 
If you stand in your back yard and put your head between your knees, you can get a good view of Uranus.

Yes the light is a problem. We don't have a street light within a 3 mile radius here. something to do with the Lord who owned the area once upon a time. It's also a conservation area so no lights!! :LOL: Oh the downside is no pub either, or shop.... :confused:

There was a strange reddish-brown haze in a circle around the full moon last night so don't know if that was to do with the solar storm?
 
It's been twenty odd years since me and my son in the wilds of Cumbria sat and gazed in awe at the Milky Way.
Spending ones life in the city you only see a handful of the brightest stars no matter how clear the night.
