No heating

Hey guys

We moved into a new house last august with an old system

Its gravity fed open vented system with feed and expansion tank in the loft.A hot water cylinder upstairs.The boiler is an old glow worm balanced flue model.

There is a water pump under the floor boards near the boiler that was replaced just before we moved in.

The system was full of black gunk and the radiator bleed valves were painted over and had not been bled for years.I have emptied the system and flushed out the radiators with a hose to clean them.

The hallway in the hallway never worked since we moved in and i thought by cleaning out the radiators this would fix it but it didnt.

I managed to get at the pump and as this had been replaced i thought it may have been fitted incorrectly so reversed it.This caused the heating not to work although the hot water still does and a wet patch appeared on a interior wall at the front of the house.

I have reversed it back but the heating still doesnt work even though the hot water does.

The Boiler when switched on stays on for 5 mins then cuts out.

The pump seems to work as when you change the speed you can hear a difference.

Any help would be appreciated

Compact pump ? think they are the old mysons ?? pretty certain that they cannot ( or its is not recommended?) that they are fitted in that postion ? e.g motor on top , horizontal ??

That is a Myson pump and it should be fitted with the motor horizontal, with the direction arrow pointing towards the boiler (normally)
Remove the black plastic cap and undo the hex nut and pull to engage the motor and check for rotation.
Boiler is an old Gloworm and now obsolete. Built like a brick you know what.

Yep the pump shaft should be horizontal - there's no bearing on the end.
First you have to find out where your pipes go, then what "system" you have.
It may well be "C" plan - google should find you a description. Look for motorised valves, if C plan there with be one, two-port.

You could try removing a small rad, connecting a mains hose to one rad valve and a waste hose to the other, then open just one rad at a time, to flush everything. Clean out the header tank first and cap its connections or you'll likely fill it up, though you might get away without.
I'll leave you to think about the pump and boiler and HW cylinder affecting things!

Look on the heating flow pipe there will prob be an anti gravity valve 3 inches long and brass these jam up and stop the heating working

Your right it's a myson compact circulating pump cp53,will look at moving the pump into horizontal position

I have pulled the plastic cap out and bled it and turned the nut and it rotated fine,
We had the boiler checked out before we moved in and he said same thing

Chris the C plan looks like the systemn i have.

I have not been able to find any motorised valves,where abouts would they be?

I will try connecting the hose to a radiator and flushing out.

Yep no thermostat on cylinder so basic gravity HW and pump CH it must be

I have taken off the radiator in the bathroom and gave it a quick run trough with hose.THis is running black with lots of magnate.I had taken offf all radiators and hosed through before i had changed direction of pump(they were running clear!) so not sure if this has unlodged som gunk near the radiator that wasnt working.

Turn off as many radiators as you can, leave one open and see if the pump can clear any airlocks.

Also check the small tank in the loft, checks it's not hot. If it is you've mostly likely got a blockage.

Sorry for delay in getting back

I have tried to flush a hose through one radiator valve and water just backed up to the tap.

Also tried leaving just one radiator on an closinig the others but this doesnt sem to do anything.

Think it may be plumber time

I had some advice off pumbers who advised powerflush and high prices.

Luckily my brother works for HSS and i got a discount on a powerflush machine.me and my dad flushed the sytem last weekedn and now the heating works even the radiator in the hallway that has never workedhappy days.

I think i am going to replace the pump as even with balacning the system all the radiators dont seem to be optimum and its had loads of rubbish running through it since installed last august.

The only problem is that the the hot water is only luck work even with only this on.We have an immersion so its not an emergency but obviously this costs a bit.I have had a brief look with regard to people with similar issues.If i cant find solution then i will start another thread.
