Dulux Trade Soft Sheen - Watering Down

I agree with vibrobullitt on this one. There's no point risking it with vinyl for mist coat when

(i) it is more expensive
(ii) you cannot be totally sure the plaster is 100% dry.

I would however be interested to know what happened to the other half of The Dec's sentence/question beginning 'Has a self-established sparks...'

Has a self established sparks [done] WHAT? Another syntactical nightmare!

Emily,I wouldn't worry about it, seems thedec just doesn't like other people giving out advice on his forum unless your one of his chosen few! ;)

And that of course is the problem, I did, yet I very much doubt if you ever will.

Not me who started the childish off rant dec. I'll be the more mature and let you carry on and not respond.

Pathetic really but there you go!

Wouldn't expect anything else really!

No, I would not doubt that elrobbo, by the way, I here of heavy rain forecast for the Cumbria area, don't forget your brolly.

Now you really are clutching at straws are you not, If the mods decide in their wisdom to feel the need to either remove a post or indeed lock the thread that will be their choice, yet most if not all regular posters on this brilliant forum will help to protect it from any form of invasion.

We are in a sense a communtity!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then perhaps you should start behaving as though you are part of a community. Communities work together to solve problems and make new members feel welcome. Individuals don't throw their weight about. People discuss things rationally and courteously; they don't just 'rubbish' others' suggestions or experience.

You seem to be struggling where most of those things are concerned.

In your opinion perhaps, yet you really are becoming rather childish.

Why - because I explained what a community is?! Not quite sure why that's childish. And my observations about the way you perceive others on the forum are all objective and demonstrable, not silly playground insults such as you've indulged in on this thread.

I'm happy to produce evidence, if you wish.

The non vinyl thing is a fallacy misinterpreted by the advent of the new(ish) paints designed to go over damp/drying plaster to speed up site work. Once plaster skim is dry there is absolutely no need to use a non vinyl paint.

Exactly. :)

Whilst I agree in the aspect that if the plaster is fully cured then there is no need to use a non vinyl. I will still be using it though, as you say if bonding and skimming has taken place then even though the skim looks dry there may indeed be moisture present in the bonding beneath it. Non vinyl also tends to be cheaper that the vinyl counter parts so also a reason for using it! I have also used in the past cheap B&Q emulsion for misting as it also had no vinyl content and was ridiculously cheap and did the job very well. Tend to use supermatt though if I can!

I appreciate your point but if one then applies a vinyl coating over the top anyway then it negates your logic?.

I would have expected that the person applying the paint would be aware of the wall's "history".

Personally I don't do "search" coat on new plaster. I just sand it first and then go for the 10-15% dilution (or as per manufacturer's recommendations).

Well job now complete - the trade softsheen is a great paint IMHO.
Ended up adding 300ml of water to the 5L tub which made it flow better during application.

I can really tell the difference between the retail paint and the trade range.

I find that the colour pigment is stronger and the paint just feels better to work with.

Elrobbo, why do you advise a non vinyl paint as a mist over a skim?

I advise a non vinyl matt as a mist as it will let the plaster breath. If using a vinyl emulsion then the vinyl content will form a barrier that will inhibit any left over moisture escape from the plaster.

Vinyl matt will still allow the walls to breath, albeit it at a lower rate than SuperMatt.
