80MPH on motorways?

IMHO there should be no lower limit on any roadway whatsoever. We should try to decrease the need for speed and return to a more leisurely pace of life.

just realised you're right... what would cyclists do !!!

Germany seem to manage okay without speed limits!

Germany has a better road stucture than we do.
And more importantly, better road manners.

Wrong! they are to straight, motorist doze off quicker, they were mainly concrete back in the 80s, once you come off the motorways you'll find the roads very uneven and poorly repaired and due to the extreme temperatures, in summer the tar melts and in the winter with temperatures -20c and a meter of ground frost with snow lying around for 3 months it plays havoc with the surface dressing, though they do make the surface more smooth than the UK to try and stop water penitration but this makes it very suseptable to aqua planing when wet, especially for the old rear wheel drive 2.3 Ford Capri

Other than "fresh" produce (which could be transported in refrigerated train containers), there is no need to hurtle everything to everywhere overnight. Persnally I'd like to see not only trains used more extensively with localised man-in-van transport to local retailers, but also canals for a whole host of goods.

So what if you've got to wait for a couple of weeks to get your plasma TV delivered? Make do and read a couple of books, or borrow a portable if you really are desperately "fixed" on corrie

Also if you're in the outside lane on the autobahns drivers willtailgate you with their indicator on wanting to overtake, and beware of Mercedes drivers, there is a saying that Mercs have "eigebaut vorfart" inbuilt priority in English and they believe it, far worse than our homegrown Volvo drivers.

It's called expense

I think that most supermarkets and whatever manufacturing we have left now operate on a last minute supply basis. It saves them from having to tie too much money up in stock. There's a name for it which escapes me at the moment.

Never work, if the train cargo quadrupled overnight it would account for about 5% of road haulage, also everything would cost more due to the fact that there would be more labour handling cost, load van, van to train, tip van load train, train from say London to Manchester, tip train, load van, that was how i started trucking in Germany in 1977, very inificient.
