What were they made of before plastic came along?

I guess canvas would be the one - like the fire brigade still use. There aren't many things that the Mighty Joe-90 doesn't know.

I have a clear mental image of a hosepipe we had back in the fifties. It was orange rubber with ribs along the outside. I'm sure it was rubber because it felt like rubber and split like rubber too. (There was no fabric reinforcement in it so the ends tended to split along the ribs and we had to keep cutting bits off.) It lasted until 1966 when we moved to a house with a proper garden and got a new, green plastic one. 8) 8) 8)

Later on, we got another one made from a more flexible plastic but the old one found its way through a succession of caravans until I finally through it out this Easter. :( :( :(

Rubber with fabric reinforcement for good quality, they were very thick and heavy

yes extruded rubber, they used to develope weak spots and would then blow up like a balloon.
