You can use any in my opinion - never had any trouble in the past 30 years.
But the proper screws have a sharper thread that cuts through the board better.
I'm more than happy to acknowledge much greater experience but I've found that when boarding a ceiling ordinary screws will pull through plasterboard whereas the proper bugle head screws don't.

Yes As long as they don't break the paper and are not proud any will do.But tge right screws are easier to use and you can get them with threads for timber or metal.
Many thanks for all the advice. I will bow to experience and use proper screws or nails. It was just a query as I have 2 boxes of decking screws going spare.
