extractor fan

Hi.need some advise.we had loft converted 5 yrs ago.we had two bath rooms fitted extracter fans fitted.down stairs into wall and upstairs into ceiling.both are linked with ceiling light which is controlled by pull switch.after a year upstairs fan which is fitted into ceiling gone off.light is still working fine.its long time and never bothered me me really because i always open sky light window.now family is asking to have it checked.so what could have gone wrong.do they have any trip out switch inside.or it is gone dead.its out side went is like slate type.i do not know what is it called.from outside you can see slightlyraised vent slots.

It sounds very much like the fan is dead, they are not hard to replace with a basic knowledge of electrics. You need to know whether it is a run-on timer or basic fan to get a replacement.

Have you any voltage at the fan, check using approved voltage indicator.
If so, there are two or three things that can generally go faulty.
PCB, motor, slow blow fuse.
What type, make/model are they?
If no voltage, could be loose connection at light or fan isolator.

thanks.i never took the cover off.its small 4 inch fan.yes it was timer based.i will take the cover off tomorow tohave a look if it has any voltage.

saleem! Don't look for voltage, test for it using approved equipment not mickey mouse stuff!

thanks.it is timer type and i have pretty good knowledge or should i say good diy skill on electrics.does it have to be timer one or can we replace it with normal one so when you switch light off it goes off.another thing i would like to know.at the moment fan is linked to light but sime times you do not need the fan but only the light for few minutes.can we change the wiring to add separate pull switch just to control fan when ever it is needed.if it can be done the how to change the wiring.

It does not have to have timer but you are best having one.
If you do at times wish the isolator to either not run as long, the timer can be reduced or not at all, you install a fan isolator, which allow light to function but isolates fan.
Remember before removing covers, even when testing for voltage, isolate first, remove covers, then re-energise to do live testing.
