its a constant battle in our household - our 12 yr old son is glued to a big Apple Monitor, an Ipad or his bloody phone it seems from the minute he wakes up to when he goes to bed. However much we try and limit his usage of this junk, it always creeps back.

The biggest issue for me is the big monitor and his eyesight.

Are kids eyes affected by overuse of PC monitors... when I say overuse, I mean 4 hrs a day weekdays and 9 hrs a day weekends.

and I aint even going into how these affect mental capabiliies like attention spans and social interactions

It probably does, since starting work and being sat a PC most of the day I have felt my eyesight get progressively worse.

Oh and when I was that age my parents would limit me to only a couple hours on the weekend and only for school work in the weekdays! I never got a phone till I was 14 too :P

far worse in my opinion is the addictive nature the antisocial health implications
this includes lack off exercise eyesight problems lack off interaction between families and friends
improper eating through addiction
numbing of feelings and basic empathy
the blurring between reality and fantasy

games consoles internet computers and other media devices along with social media sites

the best thing s to happen to the human race and the worst for some

how long ago were you 12 just out of interest?

yes if I had my way, I'd smash the whole lot up with a sledgehammer - I think these gadgets are the curse of the modern age. Just how many parents would actually do this I wonder....

wise post, I dont disagree with any of it.

How many parents here have fordbid their child to have a phone until age 16? and if not why not?

I don't know about eyesight but, with all the American content (and on television for that matter), it will certainly affect his spelling!

Yes, the effect may be realised unless advice is correctly advised

I lost my lad one christmas for about three years to X Box ,very sad ,he's grown out of it now and gave it to his younger brother and shortly after it broke down "yipee"were now a family again.

I don't know how bad for the eyes it is, but one thing you should do to limit the damage is to make sure the displays aren't too bright. My optician told me they should be as dim as is comfortable and don't sit too close. Also try and set the background to darker colours if possible. Most programs and web-browsters etc... have white backgrounds, which isn't good for the eyes.

This is something I don't have to deal with..yet... Our eldest is 7yrs old and whilst he does play computer games, he mixes it well with playing with toys, reading, jigsaws, lego etc... so doesn't spend too much time in front of screens. But in a couple of years time....who knows. He wont be having a mobile phone for many years yet though. A friend of ours has just let her 10yr old son open a Facebook account, and I have to say we're shocked that she's allowed him to. Ours wont be on Facebook at 10!

I was under the impression you had to be 16 to have a FB account?

Then again, I've never been on it so could be wrong.

I was 12, 5 years ago

Some very helpful advice is not to stare at the screen exclusively. I can't remember the recommended times exactly, but one should periodically look to the middle distance, for example, the far side of the room.

I 'multitask' - working on my laptop and watching the television at the same time!
