Got a misfire and engine warning light comes on when
I slip into 3rd gear and accelerate more quickly.
Ease back on the acceleration and it goes away.
Runs fine when zipping along the motorway at 60mph.

I have swapped the map sensor with a known good one from another car
but no difference.
Spark plugs all seem fairly reasonable.

if the management light has illuminated it would have flagged a code which you should get read to give you some idea where to go.
Did you change the map (manifold absolute pressure) or maf(mass air flow) sensor?

I replaced the sensor at the back of the manifold. It matches the pictures on ebay of the MAP sensor.
There is another sensor that is near the throttle position sensor.
I assume this is the maf sensor. Unfortunately the other atoz I have doesn't have the same sensor in the same position so can't swap.
I have no method of reading the fault codes. Unless there are some cheap devices I could buy to do this. I'm not convinced it would
tell me the actual cause of the fault.

Well it mightn't, but it will be a bit hit and miss, if you don't read the faults. Local small garage might read them for you? Would it be an intermittent fault in a coil pack? Any sign of a wet plug?

No took the plugs out all in good condition.

I think I will swap the plugs and ht leads just to eliminate those.

When ou ease back on the throttle, does the management lamp go off too?
It'll still have logged a fault code though.
John :)

Yes once you get up to speed and cruise on the motorway it runs fine
and engine light goes off.

I'm thinking I need to give the maf sensor a clean first.
