I own a ford focus 2003 and at the MOT one of the advisories was a faulty breather hose on the air intake hose to manifold. The car runs fast/slow when idle.
When I asked the garage he pointed out the hose in question , its a T-shaped hose sat just behind the air intake for the manifold .Its tucked nicely and very hard to access.
The hose is 3 pieces of pipe with a metal T-shaped junction in the middle.

My question is ;-
can i replace this without removing the manifold air intake pipes ?
and what width hose is it ?
I was contemplating doing it myself but its positioning is putting me right off.

oh and the other thing , if I do tackle it how is the hose that goes downwards held into the manifold ? I can see some kind of metal clip but I cant make out its fastening , screw thread / jubilee clip etc...

any advice would be greatly accepted.

Can you post a picture of this one (or can anyone visualise this?) Is it a ducting pipe taking hot air from the exhaust (petrol Focus presumably).
I'm not sure why the MOT bods gave you an advisory on this.
John :)

I think thats a crankcase breather pipe, that takes crankcase fumes and returns them to the engine, courtesy of the air filter housing?
They are lagged to prevent over cooling and the accumulation of oil mayonaisse.
I think I'd remove the air filter box lit, filter out, spot the bit of blue foam that catches the oil mist from that pipe and disconnect the filter box bottom.
At least you should be able to see the clip, which could be one of those horrid spring things that you squeeze with pliers to remove.
Still don't understand the MOT interest!
John :)

I think he gave an advisory casue the engine races the slows when idle. I thought it was the timing but when I took it back to ask him which pipe it was he said he could see it compress/concertina when the engine was running .,,, I had it off when I lifted the bonnet.

Aye well I can't comment on that one, but those oil fumes do play hell with rubber hoses so he may be right.
I hope you don't have to drop the exhaust manifold though
John :)

Can someone please let me know if I have to remove the manifold exhaust pipes to remove and replace the T-shaped breather pipe as (marked in red in the above picture) that is hidden behind.

I don't wan't to start removing then find its not possible to get a new one on as I've only the one car.

tbh I didnt but then again they've just had over £200 for a MOT new tyre and ball joints which I questioned but "thats the going rate" was the reply i got back.

I just don't have the money to be truthful. I can get the whole part for £15 so I'd imagine put a £50 spot on top then VAT.

breather hose is removable by using long flat screwdriver to prise of each side of hose connecting to head through the gaps in manifold ,use long nose pliers to get hold of hose and withdraw to the right at the same time prise the pcv valve out of housing ,just below spring clip and then valve can be removed new hose replaced and then refitted(y)

MOT £55 (no VAT) Tyre £55. Balljoints £25. Tracking £?? Seems like they're @ the top end of rates - Great if your car is 2013 not 2003:unsure: I've been "caught " like that before. To be fair the garage had good mechanics, they just lost sight of spending customer's money on a Banger. I'm lucky now I found a small restoration ( classic cars ) garage that is very fair on rates and brilliant on welding - I'll need that on my 2003 Combo van.;)

I recon he has either had the repair carried out or scrapped car - since he posted 5 years ago!!
