Hi guys..my kids got a ford focus 1.6tdci 2012 plate..recently engine management light came on..took it to garage and mechanic saw that the air filter hose , the one connected to the turbo, was split and patched up hy previous owner with duct tape..anyway he also said just below the turbo 3 breather pipes had come off and had swelled up and cudnt be pushed back on because they had gone too soft. He replaced the 3 breather pipes , very small ones..and patched up the air filter hose with tape, butvssid it needed replacing .for a week or so the car drove fine. Today I recieved the part AV61-9C623-CB, and replaced it myself simple a couple of jubilee clips either side..I noticed that as i took the old hose off , the patched up one, there was a lot of oil in it..put the new one on..all seemed fine..kid phones me from motorway that the engine management light has come on..and car driving in limp mode...told him to drive slowly to destination..any idea what could be the problem? Ta...see pic of oil in old hose.

There is often quite a bit of oil in the intercooler hoses...surprisingly enough! Unfortunately theres no saying how much is too much, if you get my drift but if the engine isnt blowing smoke I wouldnt worry too much.
Its worth feeling the turbo turbine if you can, to feel for free play and alsomif the blades are touching the casing.
As for the limp mode, Id look again for disconnected turbo pipes first of all. The lit management lamp will have a code stored ready for a diagnostic check of course.
John :)

We have a little bit of oil in our Diesel Kuga intercooler pipes which is normal.

Just be careful because if the turbo is on it's way out and leaks excessive oil into the intake it can cause a "runaway" engine (basically the oil is the fuel).

If you're lucky you can try and stall it with a manual gearbox but we'd be stuffed with our auto!.

As for diagnostics, buy an ELM adaptor £26) and use FORScan (free program).

FORScan is very good and better than Fords IDS imho.

It's not the intercooler pipe, it is too flexible, it looks as if it is the flexible pipe coming from the filter. Turbo/intercooler pipes are much more rigid, to cope with the boost pressure. There should not normally be oil there.
They go like this...
Air filter - that pipe - turbo - intercooler - EGR - intake.

Wild suggestion - might it be the crankcase breather system which is choked up?

The car was services recently, air , oil, fuel filter, fresh oil.. has 39k on clock..will ask mechanic to check pipes tommorrow..I was concerned as to why the 3 small breather pipes under the turbo had com away..anyway will see tommorrow...car also went into limp mode on way back yesterday..

For sure, 39k is absolutely nothing so I wouldnt be expecting great problems.
Things to check of course would be the oil level, in case its been overfilled, and then all of the turbo pipes as any malfuction here puts things into limp home. Im not sure about the breathers around the turbo - of course there will be an actuator pipe which is small diameter, but I cant comment on the others.
Id be interested to hear about the scan result - the mileage isnt enough for turbo issues but it could point to EGR problems - again a limp home problem.
Fingers crossed!
John :)

As harry Bloomfield said that looks like the pipe from the air filter ,check the MAP sensor/air flow sensor is not contaminated with oil that will put your light on and cause limp home mode.
But need to check why oil is in there . Like others have said check oil level breather pipes clear and not kink

Just an update ..got code p2599..it wasn't the engine management light , but the error " engine malfunction - service now" on the display panel. Still goes into limp mode ..Could be turbo he said but not sure..really need someone who knows there stuff.. he said might be a sensor just before the turbo....that could be dirty due to the oil contamination that I had with leaking hose..gonna take it to another garage where I nor.ally take my car for mot..see what his scanner says...will take a picture of readout.

Ok..just got back from local garage..mechanic run health check on car ..came up with following code. Same as other guy..see pic..is it worth replacing that part that I need.. if so a link would be nice to order part..ta

To be honest I was expecting the turbo actuator to throw up a fault but it hasnt that fault code if I recall.
Its a bit early to start throwing parts at it.....is there a Bosch diagnostics garage anywhere near?
John :)

Not that I know, of one..why bosch?im in birmingham..In your opinion what do you think the fault could be.?

Difficult for me to say, but Id start by making sure everything is clean, including any sensors that may be in the air flow towards the engine.
Those loose pipes below the turbo must be seen to, and its worth seeing if the turbo actuator is moving.
There will be tips on youtube for that one.
Ive found that garages advetising Bosch diagnostics have all of the up to date test gear - they do up here anyway!
John :)

Well I've had it scanned 3 times from different garages all come with same code error p2599..can I clean any sensors my self...?..

I really cant say.....the fact that the air inlet hose had so much oil in it doesnt bode too well for the operation of the turbo variable vanes - maybe they are sticking.
I would imagine the turbo actuator is electronic and it is separate from the turbo, so that could be checked by a specialist.
Basically you need a firm diagnosis, then maybe its turbo off time for a refurb by Turbo Technics or similar - I have had success with them before, and the last one was a Renault dci.
John :)
