The gap to let the water run away when our wash basin pop up plug is open is virtually nil.

The supplier sent a message saying to adjust it with the screw but I cannot see how to do that and would be grateful for some help please.

Thanks

Lift the plug out.
There is an adjusting screw and locknut at the bottom of it.
With the plug upside down loosen the locknut anti clockwise and then turn the screw clockwise a couple of turns.
Retighten the locknut.
Keep trying until you get it right.

Thanks.

The problem appears to be that the screw seems to be already as tight as it will go. We have three of these and they are all the same.

Thanks for help

Is this the type which has a rod passing through the tap body, that you pull up and down?
If the rod that passes through the tap body goes down as far as it can, then you may need to adjust the coupling behind the basin that couples this rod to the other rod coming from the plug lifter. Theres a coupling visible for this.
Bear in mind that some of these pop up plugs are meant to have the lifting rod passing through them.

Is this a spring-loaded type or rod operated (as described above)? If spring-loaded, I would have thought you need to unscrew (anti-clockwise) to increase the gap? I seem to recall having to do this on one of these at my daughter's place but not sure if we're talking about the same type.

Thanks. I think it is the one Slugbabydotcom talked about above and the

I have been trying to get a pic of it. Ours came with two Ideal Standard Italian style sanitaryware suites but the plug seems to be the same as this one on Amazon.

Thanks everyone for help.

You definitely need to be unscrewing i.e. lengthening the screw (anti-clock) rather than tightening. The one shown in your link is exactly the same one that I have. To increase the opening you need to loosen the locknut and unscrew the stud at the bottom which will make it lift higher. Retighten the locknut when you have finished adjusting. You do not want to be tightening it as this will decrease the distance that it opens.

Thanks kbdiy

That explains it perfectly and we have to admit to not really understanding how they worked.

However, having opened it sufficiently it will not seal down properly when closed so is leaking.

Can you help please?

It's just a case of adjustment in and out till it both drains away well and seals when down.

.... just like the man says :)

The best way to adjust a pop-up waste is: remove it, chuck it over next door's garden, and replace with a click waste. Fill the hole behind the tap with some clear mastic.

The hole in ours is in a very fancy chrome fitting.

I am still struggling with this.

We have two of these pop up plugs. One is very rusty and cannot be adjusted. Shall I chuck it over next door's garden?

The other one is a new one I purchased from the Amazon link above. I have adjusted it numerous times but the water still leaks when closed.

Would be grateful for some help please.
