hi can somebody clarify what the tanking is for?

I appreciate it stops water getting through to the substrate but surely if the water is getting through the tiles and is sitting on the tanking it is going to have no where to go and just eat away at the tile adhesive iver time

In some ways your right. if you get bucket loads of water flowing behind the tiles its bound to cause and issue, but this is unusual and is usually a sign of a big problem.

In most showers some water will make its way through the grout - its a small amount but can be enough to knacker plasterboard. With a tanked shower this issue doesn't arise.

You should use a waterproof grout and adhesive - this doesnt break down
when it gets wet - this and the tanking mean you are very unlikely to get problems.

if your considering diy, my advise would be to use a paint on tanking kit rather than a membrane, just due to ease of use.

tanking is to stop water damage to your subtrate but you are correct in what you mention, however i have never know that to happen, should it ever happen, as TPT says you have a serious problem

When TPT mentions you should use a waterproof grout, i think he actually means a water repellant grout, as the ONLY waterproof grout is epoxy grout and thata in my opinion is outside the bounds of d.i.y skills.

A good paint on /trowel on tanking kit is Bal wp1, i have used this since it first came o the market years ago and have never had a problem with it and it is resonably priced and easy to do

jc - yeah i mean a normal waterproof grout (meaning what it says on the bag, not what it is :-))
