It's easier to sell drugs and buy guns.

Yep, probably the best answer i've seen in a while... so true.

But back to the harsh reality, there are thousands of conflicts across the globe at any point in time. News images of petrol bombs, mortars, rocks, IED's, suicide bombers etc etc.

The motivation for these different assaults is vastly diverse, but i still think that some of these protesters want to kill the forces they face, either with half a housebrick to the face, or a petrol bomb or we've seen horrendous images of police taking a wrong turn into a riot and getting dispatched !

so if these rioters/defenders will spend time making petrol bombs, IED's etc... surely there's a niche where a bow would serve a purpose..

Lol i'm getting bored asking the question now, i sould like a desperate long-bow salesman facing hard times.... !!!

They can carry an IED hidden, same with guns. Anyone carrying a longbow is likely to get vapourised as they walk along the street, or, they are clocked by spies and when they get home they find their kids hanging on meat hooks.

Go back a page you might have missed my latest reply.

Prepare for cross bow rape machine gangs!

I can see where sombero is coming from but leaving aside the relative pros and cons of bows , cross bows, slings or machine guns there does seem to me one weapon that he has overlooked, the humble spear.
Very easy to make and versatile too . It can be used in hand to hand fighting and as a missle weapon and used with an atlatl (spear thrower, bit like a lever that sits at the end) has a pretty good range and power.
Still don't beat a gun though.

Thanks for helping me express my question .. better...

There does seem to be a gap in the weapon arsenal of your average rioter...

What about catapults? rather than throwing a rock?

You generally walk around with your throwing tools with you, then pick up ammo as you need it. I am pre-supposing that at least some rioting occurs where the combatants haven't been bothered / had time / weren't carrying their longbow, or crossbow, with them at the time.

"Just nipping out for some milk dear."
"Get some bread while you're out."
"Ok!"

(To self) - "Right. Get house keys. Mobile. Longbow...."
(Leaves house for shops).

Daft as it sounds, what do any of you mean when you say "slingshot"?

I presumed "David and Goliath"-type strip of cloth, for hurling a stone.
Now, having never having used one, I thought I'd google it, and find out how.
All I can find are what I would call "catapults".
What else would you call them?

We used to do something similar but we would wrap a turn or two around the shaft to impart a spin to it.

Sombrero hasn't thought this one through.

How would the average African rioter get their arrows back.

They surely can't be spending all their time making new arrows all day long.

Rocks are quick, and in abundance.

Rocks win all day long. :D

Oh gentlemen, perleeze, i referred to the slingshot in the photo i saw it was essentially a catapult, but without the elastic, and swung around to get the speed - and only one cord released i imagine.

But my broader point is not just rioters, it any riot type situation, and non armed rebels....

We see so much stuff on the news of peoples fighting armed forces, yet you don't see bows... i just wondered why. These conflicts last many years, and the materials are cheap, so it begs the question "are they effective?"

Unless you create a fold-up pocket version, with fold-up retractable/retrievable arrows...........NO

Mr Bean you're missing the point of my question then, because their more affluent brothers have AK47s which aren't foldable pocket versions... and i'm not on about an afternoons riot, but any conflict where it would be feasible to make a bow... including long term military disputes between government forces and militants !!?
