When a window in a side gable is obscure glazed, why is it so?

is it to stop people outside looking in, or insiders looking out? If its to give the neighbour better privacy, how does the argument work for the windows in the rear of a semi or terrace? Each semi's upper windows can see into the neighbouring garden, so why must any side windows in a gable of a neighbouring detached, be obscure?

It's supposed to stop people inside looking into neighbour's gardens, but as you say - pointless - because you already can from the bedroom windows.

Anyone can crank their necks and stare at neighbours out of any window if they really wanted to, and its impractical to prevent

The concept of preventing direct overlooking is to avoid direct sight lines and make it a bit harder for casual voyerism of nosey neighbours looking down

Many times it can involve not having opening casements too, or just a top opener
