hi chaps, first post moved into a new house and the front door latch has snapped off, meaning that the door can be opened from outside without a key.
im told i need a new gearbox? iv had a look on internet and can get one for about 25 notes.
my question is would i be able to remove the old one and put the new one in myself with basic tools? or do i need anything in particular to get it out?
also what how do i find out what size i need to get the right one as some have different backsets and pz measurements.
heres one i found on ebay my handle has two spindles and the handle is offset.

If it is just a replacement gearbox all you will need should be a Phillips and/or a star bit

Hi guys fair so I only need to remove the handle, remove the lock and unscrew the strip around the side of the door.

Mate I don't know what make the door is ha how can I find out?
I was going to remove it and take the measurements of the gearbox i believe the back set and pz dimesions and get someone on here to help me find a replacment.

If its not a coldseal door then scrub the gearbox in your link.

If you can remove the lock mech and take it to them they sort you out 100% guarantee it

Remove the lock mech by taking the handles off, spindle out, barrel out and remove only the self tapping screws along the length of the lock strip, if you see any machine threaded screws put them back in as these hold the gearboxes onto the lock strip

If you want us to ID your lock for you first we need...

A make, this should be stamped somewhere along the lock strip possibly near the centre

The PZ, the measurement from the centre of the spindle to the centre of the circular portion of the barrel, most new doors are 92mm PZ

The backset, the measurement from the faceplate backwards to the centre of the handle, most lock mechs are 35mm but vary upto 55mm

How many hooks it has if any

How many rollers it has if any

How many mushrooms it has if any

To me this is simple (its my job) to a DIYer it might seem daunting, if you don't feel confident take my advice above if poss

Hi crank thanks for going through it.
That firm is along way from me mate maybe I could send them some pictures when I have it out.

I'm confident ( famous last words ) I can do it haha
I don't get why the edge stop won't come off I undone the Phillips screws
removed handle and spindle and removed the screw that holds the euro cylinder but it won't budge? I don't have a torx tool to removed the machine screws how annoying.

Well if you'd stop posting with 2 different usernames  , one minute your in Kent now your in London, so now that your in London how far are these guys from you?...

Crank I contacted one of them firms you mentioned and they only have the full lock kit which is about £100.

Only differnce seems one of the centre hooks gos up and the other goes down
Could I just switch the metal plate on the frame upside down?
