Intergas 24/18 locking out 'fault code 4'

The ultra reliable? Intergas 24/18 has started locking out with a code 4 listed. Works OK on both DHW and CH for a while then just locks out again. On resetting will fire up and seems OK but eventually locks out again sometimes after a minute or so other time after a good hour or more. Clearly something is amiss, any clues?

PS Hmmh. Just done a quick search and someone had a similar problem earlier this year. Their engineer said it was the ignition module which I hear had problems so they changed the design. The problem with that is the new module isn't compatible with the gas valve. So both have to be replaced.

i) Can anyone confirm or shed any light on this and 2) If there is a 'known' design fault aren't the manufactures duty bound to put it right...or have I eaten too many naive tablets!

How old is it? If registered with a Platinum Installer you will have 5 years warranty on the boiler providing that it's been registered and serviced annually. By the way, who would install a 24/18?

If you looks underneath the boiler you will see the data plate, look at the serial number, what are the first 4 digits after the '-'?

A 24/18 can only produce a maximum of 8.5 litres/min of hot water at a temperature difference of 35°C. Whereas the 28/24 produces a max of 10.5 litres/min with the 36/30 and 36/40 providing 13 litres/min. The max heating and hot water outputs can be easily adjusted.

Anyway, has anyone worked on the boiler recently? It sounds like the boiler is firing, but under certain conditions is struggling to stay lit.

James. The boiler was from a property that had been extended with additional rads hence needed a bigger boiler. It's now fitted in a small modern flat (no bath just wet room/shower) and just five rads to cope with.

The boiler was fitted during a renovation but not used/tested until a couple of weeks ago when the problem was noted.

Does that shed any light?

Hi Tony. For the record, I'm waaay beyond a DIY'r. My dad was a plumber/heating engineer and I worked with him from about the age of 5 (in 1960!) in his workshop and on jobs!(child slave labour!!!) I can sweat copper to lead using moleskin and tallow..anyone remember those days!! I fitted central heating for donkeys years and am very highly skilled but changed career 17 years ago, hence no longer CORGI as it was back then.

Having said that if it's the ignition module which I'm pretty sure it is then its electrical in its entirety.

If anyone can shed light on the ignition module NOT being compatible with the original gas valve can they let me know. As I heard the new module require that you also replace the valve, is that true or false?

Unlikely that you know how to use an FGA, or appreciate the readings then.

Call a Gas Safe registered engineer and try not to sound like a smart ar****ting.

Presumably we have to conclude that it was not installed by a gas reg, not serviced annually and unlikely to be still covered by the maker's warrantee,
