PTFE tape is cleared for drinking water I have touched a fair bit in my time and I am still here!
I do vaguely remember it being referred to as arsenic tape many years ago when it first came out but a search on line does not show any direct connection. Perhaps the compounds share certain chemicals so it got associated with it, but as far as my research goes there seems to be no real connection.
I certainly don't worry about handling it and I am a bit OCD when it comes to safety
Used as intended, I'm sure PolyTetraFluoroEthylene (PTFE or Teflon) is perfectly safe; after all it is used, in various forms as a non-stick coating on cookware.
However a web-search of what happens when it is exposed to excessive heat (>350C) suggests it decomposes into numerous byproducts, including hydrofluoric acid and a fluorophosgene.

No doubt some daft sods have tried burning a teflon wrapped fitting clean with their blow-torch and wondered why their fingers sting after getting the gooy mess onto them. And what was that strange smell ??
