Our microwave is circa 8 years old (the same as our dishwasher, on another thread!).

It has recently starting making a moaning/groaning sound when going round.
It doesn't seem to do it when nothing is on the glass dish, but when you put something in it, it starts with the moaning/groaning sound.

Does it need a clean (which it is visually, but considering its age)? Any suggestions on what to do?
Or does it sound like the motor (in which case is it cheaper to just replace)?

Thanks.

It is probablt the motor bearing. CAUTION !!! Taking apart a microwave is dangerous EVEN IF UNPLUGGED. Microwaves contain heafty capacitors that MUST BE DISCHARGED before attempting any repairs, frankly I feel your best options are either repair by a competent person or bearing in mind its age, replacement.

Thanks EddieM.

Going to give it another clean, but failing that, either repair (by a professional) or throw it.
Does anyone have an idea (roughly) of a cost to repair if it is the motor bearing?

More than it's s reasonably worth.

Wow. How much are microwaves?

Anyway, cleaned he microwave and did as much as I dare to (which was, well, clean it).
Maoning/Groaning continued.

New microwave it is (as it is for the dishwasher too, also for the macbook at some point soon and now boiler is giving us jip!)

Microwaves are peanuts these days, electrical items have an annoying habit of breaking in clusters, usually around xmas. I remember vividly boasting to my mate that my old faithful TV of over 14 years hadn't skipped a beat, turned it on to prove it and pffftt.... fizzle..... new TV  (I laugh now but it was literally a couple of days before Christmas!)

Agree. Relatively cheap to replace nowadays...unless you have a wife who wants colour coordination 😜

changing your wife will be vastly more expensive than the microwave.
