I have a data logger that needs a windows PC to store the data via a USB lead. Is there a gizmo that just does this without the need of a laptop? ie something small that the USB plugs into that just records the data onto a sd card or even on to itself?

eco Google 'usb to sd card adapter' there are plenty out there but if it will do what you want, or compatible, don't know.

No, there's really nothing else you can use. It needs a USB host and, I imagine, their software. You're stuck with that.

Those are devices, not hosts....

Im not to sure what hosts & devices means but the ones I have seen on ebay etc are for putting information in rather than getting information out (if that makes sense) they cost a fiver - so cant possibly replace a laptop?

Someone I know was going on about using Raspberry pi's as mini computers (apparently you can install Linux on it). I think it will do what you want and only draws a watt or so.

But my knowledge of them and programming only extends as far as knowing they exist and can be used for your purpose.

/maybe not very helpful.

You could probably get it working on Pi or maybe even an Arduino but it'll be a lot of quite techy work. Probably easier to pick up a cheap 2nd hand laptop or a new data logger that has storage built in.
