Need some painting advice please guys.
Owners before have used plain emulsion on the ceiling in our bathroom and it bubbles above the shower area when it steams up.

Will I get away with painting a couple of coats of proper Kitchen bathroom paint here or will I need to seal the current paint first of all?

Thanks as usual
Pete

A more durable paint can be applied over the emulsion, but use a stiff brush to remove any loose, flaking or bubbled paint. Use a mist coat on any bare plaster.

what sort of extractor fan do you have? Sounds like it is not powerful enough.

How thick is the insulation above the ceiling?

Some good points there thanks John.

To be honest no extraction, just window open all times we're at home or showering.
Will try rubbing down loose areas and cover with good quality bathroom paint and see how I get on.

Thanks again

Save up for an extractor, preferably an inline ducted one which can extract 240 cu.m/hr.

It will whisk away the steam that is causing the trouble.

Is this type of extraction easily installed by a semi competent DIY'er like myself or will I require the services of an electrician?

if you have a loft or other space above, the fan part can be installed up there (so not in the bathroom) and a duct run to exhaust outside the house. Sometimes you can poke the duct through the eaves, sometimes you need a core drill to make a hole in a gable wall (I would advise against making a hole in a roof, unless you get a good roofer to do it and avoid leaks).

The wiring is not difficult, but if you don't know how to do it, an agile electrician can. Have it installed to come on with the light switch, with a 20 minute overrun. They can be much quieter than cheap wall fans, as well as three times as powerful.
