hi

I recently set up a 4K Samsung tv. It connects to the Sky+ box via HDMI (only) and uses the Samsung IR sender to allow the Samsung remote to control the sky box (which is in a cupboard).

I know that the sky remote can be set up to control basic TV functions such as volume but is it possible to use the Sky remote to control the Sky box via the Samsung IR sender?

If not what 3rd party product would you recommend?

Thanks

If you'r samsung remote does it all, why bother with the sky remote :confused:

I'm probably missing the trick here

The client doesn't want to learn how to use the remapped buttons on the Samsung remote.

She became rather "animated" about the matter even though I had explained beforehand that she could use the Samsung remote.

It's possible to buy IR receiver/sender kits that piggyback on to HDMI cables. They're commonly refered to as IR injector kits. Here's something on Amazon.

I bought these and was not impressed at all, in the process had to send 5 sets back, as the quality of the HDMI is well below what is acceptable. not all wires are connected inside.

PS, you can code the sky remote for the samsung

@mcluma
will the codes allow sky remote pass through. I thought that they just allowed basic control of the TV, eg volume

Did you buy that exact version, or just some variant of the same idea? There are better quality versions available.... but much more money of course. I did think about recommending something better, but since so many such posts are followed by someone crowing that they've found something similar for a fraction of the price then I thought 'why bother?'.

What he has suggested won't work in the way you want. That's just control of the TV using the Sky remote. You need to relay Sky commands to a hidden Sky box.

If running coax (or any additional cable) and setting up a Sky eye isn't possible then really your two options are either an IR injector or a wireless IR sender.

Philips (AFAIK) did a good job designing the Sky remote, so much so that it has become the go-to "TV remote" as far as many families are concerned. I am not surprise your client has baulked at the idea of using something else. You'll need to bite the bullet on this one.

I agree, the layout of the Sky remote is superb, also the menu structure of Sky beats the socks of virgin.

I myself use Pyramid transmitter and receiver, as the HDMI pass through, even at a price of a little under Gbp40, didn't do it for me
