Waste Pipe Size

I'm just about to start putting in my first kitchen. The old one was previously removed by other people and one of the waste pipes was cut off at the wall (inside). Not a problem just replace it. The size appears to be different from what I can get at local DIY. Original appears to be 46mm everything now seems to be 40mm.

Has the size changed?
is the larger size (46mm?) still available?
Is there any reason to stick with the larger size if still used?

40mm is the nominal size but can vary between pipe type and manufacturers. 40mm pipe is typically 43mm externally so you're not far off and a multifit fitting may be ok. If not you could use http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/40mm-or-1...879280?hash=item3cc9ee5bf0:g:vJoAAOSwq7JUKoFo to adapt it.

Cheers for the reply denso. The pipe was cut off at the wall so no chance of getting the multifit on that you mention. I put a vernier gauge on

The waste pipe was cut off flush to the wall so can't get the multifit on that you mention. The u bend kit that I bought does measure 40mm on the outside (checked with vernier gauge). Just need to make sure I'm buying the right stuff : )

Kitchen sink, dishwasher, washing machine etc all require 40mm (1.1/2" in old money) there is a slight difference in od between solvent weld and push fit
Easier and probably cheaper in the long run to replace the lot with new 40mm, solvent weld or push fit whichever your comfortable using.

That makes sense as there isn't that much to replace when I look at it. Not sure which yet solvent or push fit. Probably leaning towards the solvent weld as I can't find any where round Bolton that supplies brown therefore I will paint the piping to match guttering etc. I suspect that the solvent weld will be better for painting!?

Quite a few manufacturers have discontinued Brown from their ranges due to a lot of the new build developers just using Black and White.
Also brown seems to suffer from UV fading more than the other colours, particularly on the "budget" brands where they mix less colour pigment into the product to keep cost down.

Solvent weld is the professional's choice, and looks far neater. It is advised to paint all exterior plastic pipework to protect it long term from the UV in sunlight.
