Unvented Hot Water Cylinder - Do you need a certificate?

Hello all,

Quick question - do you need to be certified to service it and do you need to be certified to replace a faulty valve i.e. Expansion relief valve

The plumber i spoke to said you only need to be certified to install it. You can service/replace faulty valve without being certified.

Is he correct or not?

This is the same company that originally install the system (new build property) for the area.

Basically i got one of their engineer coming over tomorrow to look water dripping in the tundish and the last thing i want is someone who doesn't know what they are doing touching that system.

The regulations (Building Regs G3) require that a hot water storage vessel with a capacity of more than 15 litres, which does not incorporate a vent pipe to atmosphere, should be installed, commissioned, inspected and serviced by a competent person. The unvented hot water identity card that is issued is recognised by Building Regulations Approved Document G (section G3) and accepted by Local Building Control as evidence of competence.

Exactly!

The main purpose though is because the safety devices are so important to prevent them exploding.

A qualified person should be able to check that they are present and correctly connected and operating.

I expect your problem will be pretty minor.

Yes you do with good reason I once was on a new estate and some unregistered pillock had a go at
fitting one,he didn't know were to put the expansion valve and blow off so he plugged them.
He then filled it and switched it on,this was about 11-00am.At 11-45 all the people who wereworking
in the house came out for dinner.Just after 12-10pm an enormous explosion took 3of the 4 bedrooms
and the bathroom completely.When the dust settled no one was hurt how god only can answer that.
The plumber who did this was in court and boy did he get megger done he got time and serve him
right.

As other have said, he's talking pi$$.

Show him this and then ask him to check with his insurance and see if they want to pay out when his non qualified plumber does something wrong

Anything that has the potential to do this needs to be installed and looked after by a suitably qualified UVHW (G3) person.

No Kidding I saw it with my own eyes and a couple of minutes later off went my pager for
the fire brigade and I ended up on site of explosion.nearly as bad as a gas bang.
