Hi,

I have just rendered the side of my house and looking to source a few of these clips for securing the cable(s) to the wall (2 x 12mm dia OD), the picture is of the original, I've done all the ebay searches but hasn't turned up anything. This secures the incoming cables to the barge board, wall etc....I'm also planning on clipping a cable guard over the top and painting it to match the wall on the rendered section.

Thanks in advance

You really shouldn't mess about with incoming cables. It may be your house but you cannot touch that gear - for one reason alone: it could kill you!
Indeed, that's the advice that must be given, However, do you remember my story about the incoming cables to my house which needed 're-clipping' because several of the clips had broken and sections of the cables were seriously sagging, when I was given similar advice? When the DNO man turned up (remarkably quickly), he was very nonchalant about the work - standing on a metal ladder with absolutely no PPE ("can't work with gloves on")!!

Kind Regards, John

If that had been witnessed by another employee in the ENWL area (ex Norweb), the guy would have been at serious risk of losing his job.

I can believe that. However, my neighbour has grape vines (which need to be pruned and harvested) growing all over/around those cables, so if it were the case that the cables were not 'safe to touch' (PPE is not normally worn whilst harvesting grapes :) ), then the DNO really ought to do something about it, shouldn't they?

... and the metal ladder was presumably provided by his employer.

As above call the DNO to sort it, cables of that age could have poor insulation which can break away when disturbed. Supply cables are more dangerous than they look!

I don't think the DNO can take into account that people will do stupid things, can they?

How are they to know people are doing stupid things with their equipment?

:) Surely the majority of folk would realise that training their green pettykins across live wires is not a brilliant idea?

No, but does touching (probably unintentionally) a cable that the DNO has attached to a wall whilst tending one's grape vine (or whatever) necessarily count as "doing a stupid thing"?

People are quite used to touching the ('live') cable of their hair dryer, vacuum cleaner or whatever whilst using it, so can they necessary be expected to think that the cable on their wall would/could be more hazardous?

In the case I'm talking about, I think the (ancient) plant life in question probably pre-dated the current cables by many years - so maybe the DNO folk should have wondered whether or not installing their cables behind the plants was a brilliant idea?

Kind Regards, John
