The controls for my elderly father's heating system are in a cupboard above/behind the sink in the bathroom. When he wants to change the timer, or use the 1 hour over-ride switch, he has to climb up to reach into the cupboard.

My sister has suggested a proper small solid-footed step ladder as a christmas present, but I feel at 95 he should not be climbing at all!

I'd prefer to see the cntrols moved, so

* is this a job for a GasSafe engineer, a plumber or an electrician?
* are there Building regs that would prohibit moving it out of the cupboard onto a convenient adjacent wall in the bathroom? Or would it have to be moved right out of the bathroom?
* what ballpark cost in the Home Counties?

Why not leave the programmer on 24 hrs and use the rom stat to control the heating?

Solid-footed step ladder for a Christmas present??.....it would be similar to giving my wife an ironing board for Christmas...:)
Why not club together with your sister and pay for the controls to be moved , I would imagine this would be a better present than that of a step ladder!

You can't teach an old dog new tricks....

Errrrr.... that was exactly the reason for asking the 3 questions above!

Any answers? Or as Terrywookfit suggests should I be on the electrical board?

there are so many options these days but ne controls is the way to go, Salus do a very simple one that is wireless so a receiver next to the boiler and a transmitter wherever suits it has a small red light that comes on when the heating is on, dont get programmable digital thermostats the elderly hate them as they are too complicated, sorry I never quote prices on here

Thanks Ianmcd. However pursuading dad to make any change at 95 is not easy (hence sister's idea of a step ladder).

Wireless would be a couple of stepladders too far.

What he might accept is (ideally) the same, or near identical, controls moved somewhere near the existing one but handier to reach.

Perhaps to simplify that last question, would it be
* less than£50?
* £50 - £100?
* £100+?

Did your father not teach you manners?
I really don't think costs should be an issue , after all he is 95 years old.

Electrician (if he understands heating controls , not all do )
gas safe engineer (if he understands heating controls , not all do)

£100+

Then I suggest you leave the controls where they are..:)
Cheers - I'll get my sister to hunt out a ladder!

No - he left home when I was 6. But I forgave him!

Did I say costs were an issue? I'm just gathering information. Always wise before going shopping.....
