Could this be connected to hot water supply [pressurised system] as we find the inline filter does nothing to remove the nasty taint we have on our cold water supply [tea tastes awful unless water used is from the hot tap].

Assuming you have an unvented hot water system, the hot water comes from the same source as the cold water, its just heated and stored. Because its stored, you'd be advised not to drink it, as its no longer "Category 1" water.

Because both hot and cold come from the same source, its surprising that the cold has a taint. It would be sensible to trace the cold water back to the stop-tap to see if there is anything causing the taint. Its rare, but it has been known for flexible hoses, which have a rubber inner with a braided mesh outer, to give the water a taste.

Had the problem over 20 years, recently changed hot tank, internal pipe work and also replace old lead pipe back to water meter( also new).None of this has any effect, had a local window fitter in recently and he commented on the water taste, funny thing is his shop is less than 200m from my house so presumably on the same mains supply but does not have this problem.?

If the tea tastes okay when made with water from the hot tap, then that suggest that the incoming supply is okay, and you're getting the taint from somewhere in the cold line. I take it you don't have a cold water tank, as they could have got the feeds mixed up somewhere.

Have you thought about a Carbon drinking water filter ? Or did you mean that by "inline filter "

Insinkarator has inline filter and previously we had carbon filter on fridge cold water supply ( straight off the mains) but neither make any difference to taint. No water tank. It's as though what ever causes the taint settles out in the hot tank.

Try bypassing the filter, or even checking to see if you can get some water out of the nearest joint after the water enters the house.

First connection after it enters property is the kitchen tap.Problem existed long before the insinkerator was installed last week.

Disconnect any hoses for washing machine, dishwasher, fridge, outside tap etc., flush a decent amount of water through each of the hose connector outlets (into a bucket or whatever), then see if there is any difference to the taste.
If not then disconnect the pipe to the kitchen tap, fit a temporary tap or valve and see if the water from that is any different.

All pipework is new, all appliances are new, washing machine is out in garage after all other connections.Had the same problem for over 20 years regardless of pipework, new or old.

Sorry foxhole, I meant can you find a joint that can be taken apart near where the water enters, and if no compression joint, can you cut pipe and test the water, and then put a compression repair in. It's just pretty odd that the hot water tastes okay, but the cold doesn't, as the hot has to come from the cold pipe first. If the neighbours water is okay, then it can't be any chemicals added by the water company that are being heated off, but if the hot water is effectively getting "treated", then it begs the question of how far you have to go back in the water supply, before you get it as taste free as the neighbours. Have you tried talking to the local water suppliers.

taste is probably from your kettle , ( can't see the whole thread )

If the tea tastes okay with water from the hot tap, then it can't be the kettle.

Foxhole, can you take us through the plumbing setup please.

Cold feed from meter to kitchen [mdpe] T to upper floor [copper]bathroom and loft where boiler and hot tank sit .Another T to garden utility room via more mdpe. Under sink we have inline filter to insinkerator tap.

Tainted water existed before this new pipework was installed and we had a cold water supply from meter via lead and a cold tank [now both removed.] We used to have a cold feed to a fridge which also had an inline carbon filter.

Both before and now any water taken from any cold source has the taint, any from hot tank [both old and new] is untainted.

It's weird that the feed coming out of the hot tank is fine, unless the heat is clearing out whatever the chemical is.

As the problem seems to come from the feed in to the house, then it's got to be a supply problem. I'd knock on a few doors to check their supply, then call the water board.
