As the title what do people tend to use the coloured fluid, I guess for ease of visibility. Or water?

Depends on the range of pressures you want to measure.

One bar pressure using water will need a tube more than32 feet tall , using mercury ( health and safety concerns ) will need a tube 2.5 feet tall

Depends what gauge you're using. The Regin Premier gauge requires the Premier fluid to work properly

I use a Testo 510i

I used to use cheap vodka, ok I know that the s/g is different but it doesn't freeze when left in your van overnight in the winter and the plus point is you can neck it.

Plain tap water considering the number of times it has leaked out into my bag over the years, with coloured water I would have a rainbow tool set by now!:p

Then you need to use tap water. Not the coloured liquid. the specific gravity of the liquids is different so the results will vary.

You should know this though from your ACS surely?
