I have a vented system (S plan) in a flat Gloworm boiler which I am looking to change. Because of lack of head between expansion tank and boiler looks like I will go for a system boiler. I have had quite a few heating companies round to give quotes but in most cases they try to persuade me to go down the combi route
Which I don't want.
Just wondered if there was any reason for this as I would have thought that going from a vented system to system boiler was no more work than a combi?
Thanks

Swapping to a combi is always more work. If you don't want one you don't have to have one. Perhaps the companies have a reason for going the combi route?

Frankly as an installer I'm more concerned wifth regards product quality, but would offer you our preferred model which is a combi boiler that can also be a system boiler. That way your options are open.

I'm in Tokyo at the moment, we do cover you're area though.

Drop me an email and we can talk (y). My web address is in my profile... just change the www bit with "info".

Funny you should say that...last time we were here the ace needed a new EV on the booster set. For the amount being charged it would have been cheaper for me to fly home, pick one up and fly back.

If there's enough head between the expansion tank and the boiler for the Glowworm, why wouldn't it be OK for the replacement?

Thats a good question. I assume that when the boiler was first installed in this flat approx 40 years ago things were different and boilers were definatly different, no fan no pcb. I have had various comments over the years from companies coming to service it, pump over etc.
When I contacted Worcester Bosch they told me that there has to be 250 ml between bottom of tank and top of boiler otherwise the guarantee would be invalidated. So hence going to a pressurized system.

Honourable FIL is not the greatest at mastic. Have a couple of flats to go through and touch up. :( . Still I have two fridges full of beer and wine in lieu of payment . One fridge even opens itself. Much like the bogs auto flush. No good if you have a doubleheader though :eek:

At that age it probably has the cold feed on the boiler return.

And you have less than 250 mm? I assume you mean mm, and they're not specifying a volume (ml)? Though that's unlikely, it's less than 1/2 pint.
Is it possible to raise the header tank, or lower the boiler?
I'd expect the specified head to be between top of boiler and header tank water level, not tank bottom.

On extreme low head situations, we seal the system, put a pressure reducing valve on the filling loop and leave at about 0.75 bar. If a system can't take that then you have major problems.
