Two way light switching (two switches), switching light in attic. One in attic one in hall. Need a switch in hall with a light that indicates loft light is on. Looked have not seen one. Any suggestions?

Not sure they can exist, due to the varying switching combinations, you normally use a separate indicator, you would also need a neutral at the switch, one other way is mount an indicator on the ceiling and wire from the loft light in parallel, if you do have a neutral at the switch, depending how its wired regarding the switch line, you can change the switch to a modular grid type and incorporate the indicator there.

Using that system either L1 or L2 depending which is permanent line and which is switched line could work a neon if there is a neutral at the switch, however it is unlikely you will find a switch pre-wired.

Clipsal Australia (Schneider) make a SPDT switch with a neon indicator but I do not know if it available in the UK.

However I have had two of a previous model of these - because the neon in the first one failed and the second one has also failed!

The best approach would be to use a two gang wall plate with a seperate neon indicator.
I have used a four gang wall plate with three switches and a neon indicator at the door-way in a laundry which leads to a garage where the light is two-way switched.
The neon indicates if the light in the garage has been left on.

If it's a SP switch then with no neutral available in the back box I can think of only one way to make the neon work and it is not a good way.

Hard-Work,
As others have said, what you are trying to do is difficult/impossible without a Neutral.

However, Would you be happy with the reverse - where there is a Glow Plate around the Switch that is illuminated when the Loft Light is out, and not illuminated when Loft Light is on?

You could put the following Glow Plate around the Switch, and wired across the Loft Light switch:

Indeed. As has been implied, there could be one fairly easy way, but it would be distinctly 'naughty' (which is why we're not writing about it) :).

I thought of that sort of approach (which could be done with grid modules, if one didn't want a 'glow plate), but I can't see how it could be made to work with 2-way switching. With incandescent lamps/bulbs, it might be possible to do it by putting a small capacitor between the strappers, but I can't see it being a viable approach with CFLs or LEDs.

Kind Regards, John

John,
Doh... you are right I missed that it was "2-way switching" and read it as "2 switch plate in hall" (which is what I have).

Hard-Work,
Pls ignore my suggestion.

You can build a two way switch with neon using MK grid plus. K3632+K3702+K4889+K4981

Install a small LED plinth or decking light in the ceiling that comes on with the loft light.

The OP just asked if the device existed, he never said if this was an existing or new install and if exiting whether he had a neutral at the switch.

But yes if he doesn't have a neutral at the switch he will indeed have some wiring work to do.

Leave the loft hatch open. Then you can see if the light is on or off.
Oh there I go, not bring helpful again:D
