I have a 2004 Mondeo with nearly 200k miles. As per the service schedule I replaced the serpentine belt at 150k miles and kept it in the boot for emergency use. I can't see a name on the replacement, (it wasn't Ford's own) but at < 50k miles the multi-vees are badly cracked. I don't know whether it's in imminent danger of failing, I'd have thought most of the strength is in the solid flat part, with the reinforcing cords. The original Motorcraft belt looks fine.

I paid < £10 for the replacement in June 10, just been quoted £14.80 for Quinton Hazell, which sounds about equivalent for today. Ford want £35, and on internet a Continental one for £28. Maybe mine was a bad one. QH are supposed to be to OEM spec, but I'm wondering whether it's worth paying more. Not that I'm likely to keep the car another 50k miles, but curious if anybody has experience.

Id doubt if the belt was in immediate danger of failing, but hell, thats why we replace them in the first place
Ive known them to destrand and whip the timing belt off, twice
Like timing belts, its Gates for me, every time.
John :)

Thanks for that. I've heard Gates make them for Ford. But how do I get a Gates one? I'm trying on the web at the moment, but any tips welcome!

I just use my friendly motor factor and specify what I want....basically Gates timing belt kits and Blueprint for general service bits.
Factors are getting much better it seems - I needed a crank pulley for a Transit recently, and also a sump for a Toyota Amazon.....the factor sourced both. Its a north east firm -AV Taylor - but they always come up trumps. I believe one of their main suppliers are FPS.

The only place I found where I could get a Gates was EuroCarparts. They said £17.17, which I would have gone for, but then they did a Ryanair on me and the total was £27-something. So I got the QH. Changed it and the one I took off, Motaquip looks pretty bad. I'm unimpressed by that as the original looked fine after 150k, and this looks dicky after 50k.

Motaquip was originally the main parts supplier for Peugeot / Citroen and owned by them.....I believe they are a private company now.
Either way, you shouldn't have any issues with QH.
I'm surprised you haven't needed a replacement tensioner by now - the Transit at least seems to eat them at around 100k.....together with the crank pulley

OK thanks. Tensioner and pulleys were OK.
