Can’t find studs with magnets

Oops. Think they’re meant to have that groove? Just seen some without.

The grove is standard. The really cheap ones don't have a groove.

Your spade bit looks fine. Plaster is really soft, it should go through easily.

Positively last query on this. I’ve done a few dummy runs using the 25mm bit and bracket on a spare piece of plasterboard to secure the Gripit fixings. Despite spirit level and best endeavours, I can never seem to make the screw holes perfectly level. I’ve tried lining up all holes and then drilling. Also drill one hole, secure bracket, then drill second position etc. Each time, the second hole is marginally below level when I screw in. It’s almost like the initial marked position is level, but the combination of hole size and Gripit makes it skew a bit.

On all the videos, they all take five seconds and bracket is level when fixed.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I can only imagine that you are not lining up the tip of the spade bit with the pencil mark on the wall. You could try drilling a tiny hole first and then let that guide the spade bit tip.

Thank you. I mark the hole precisely and use spade to make an initial hole. I think the problem is that the big hole must allow some movement when the Gripit goes in.. The other thing is that the screw is v tight against bracket, so no wriggle room to adjust.

You could make the bracket hole slightly bigger and then use washers.

Whenever I have used Gripits, the Gripit has fitted snugly into the plasterboard. Are you saying that yours are loose in the hole?

Thanks again. Will have a go at the weekend and let you know how I get on.
