Can I tape my sledgehammer head to deaden the sound?

I am using a sledgehammer and wedge to split big logs and the metal-on-metal sound is really aggravating - not just loud but so sharp it hurts my brain even with ear protection. Like nails on a chalkboard to me, I've always hated the sound.

I wondered if I could tape the wedge or the hammer to muffle the sound - if it would help and if it would last more than a couple of whacks? Maybe it's a stupid idea, if not any tips are welcome.

devise some way of mounting the wedge to a baseboard and have a support for the log?
then hit the log "onto" the wedge

Hmm, I can picture it. I can also picture the log splitting and the hammer handing on the point of the wedge when the log turns out to be very weak :)

I'm not saying it's definitely a bad idea but I'll wait for others to chime in who know more than me!

I think it would end in tears!

maybe a log bomb would be quieter?

That's what I mean by a wedge. But even though it's a softer metal, you get that really bright sound hitting with a sledge.

Unless these logs are a one time thing, buy a log splitter.
Massively easier, quicker and quieter.
I've been tempted but while not maybe a one time thing, there's definitely a big backlog to get through. To be honest, I like the rustic nature of splitting with an ax (and I'm tight) - it's only on the giant ones I use the wedge.

Possibly a bit OCD/autistic but it offends me the noise is happening even if it's only other people who can hear it :)

I don't own one. I do own a splitting axe and a hammer and a wood grenade...
