Halfords Tool Chest - Advanced vs Regular?

Hi All, needing to stock up on some car tools and thought I should buy a cabinet, not being a pro mechanic I'm needing something alright, but not wanting to spend thousands. I have a halfords trade card.

Being the industrial / pro range has gone in favour of advanced, has anyone compared the advanced to their standard range? Spec wise they both look very similar, both ball bearing drawer sliders...I'll probably pick up in January hoping for a sale.

The advanced has more drawers and looks to have heavier duty wheels. It can hold more weight overall (300kg Vs 125kg) individual drawers can hold more weight (30 vs 25) and it has a 3 year guarantee. It’s also slightly bigger. All in the specs.

Plenty more choice at Machine Mart, and Homebase were doing them too.

Have a look at the price of the Snap-On stuff. You’ll see the Halfords stuff is bargain basement prices, even at full price!

I often wonder why people buy snap on toolboxes. I think a lot of it is tool snobbery.

Buying tools is essential to earn money. But storage doesn't earn money. It needs to be strong, effective, well organised and practical, and possibly mobile.

I would say buy tool storage accordingly. Forget the name, look at how it suits your needs.

Agree, have a look before deciding what to buy.

But halfords, like machinemart, and others do various levels of quality. All relevant to the type of use they are intended for.

I bought one from ebay a few years ago, 'slightly damaged' and it was only slight but a fraction of the cost I have seen some for. The metal is not all that thick and the drawers can feel a little flimsy if the have a lot of weight in them but it works fine. Its halved the time it takes to do some jobs as I can now find my tools!

My Snap-on tool box was £2500 empty, bought it 14 years ago and it's been in costant daily use and still good as new.

Not snobbery at all, right tool for the job..

I have a cheap and cheerful one at home but it wouldn't put up with the use the Snap-on one gets..

I have the black industrial top and bottom boxes and they are reasonable quality but not what id call industrial.
Very good value on sale.
Ive heard good reports about these.

You might want to look at Sealey Superline-Pro boxes as well.

They've got a wide range of sizes/configurations, robust and they gave decent ball bearing slides - I've found there's a huge variation in the quality of "ball bearing slides".

Some have twice the number of bearings and some have a plastic liner/bearing support between the slides which seems to make the action smoother. Sealey also have regular promotions.
